What You Should Be Playing This Weekend Of 9/12/25
It has been a jam-packed week of video games here at Game Informer and at large. We reviewed Borderlands 4, interviewed the developers behind it on The Game Informer Show this week ahead of its launch, got our butts kicked in Silksong (again and again), and survived the onslaught that was today's Nintendo Direct. As you might expect, we here at Game Informer love playing video games, and we love writing about them because it's our best way of speaking directly to you – our audience. We enjoy sharing the games we're loving, the ones we're not, what titles fascinate us, what we're looking forward to, and occasionally, what we had for lunch (carne asada is back at Chipotle, so I indulged in a burrito there today). We used to do a weekly series called Weekend Warrior, where we discussed what we're planning to play in the forthcoming weekend. We're still experimenting with bringing something like that back to the site, but we want to go deeper. We don't want to just talk ad nauseam about the games we're playing (which often include embargoed stuff where we have to annoyingly/cheekily call it REDACTED), but instead, use this space to highlight interesting things happening in games you might have missed, new perspectives we've gained on old favorites, reminders about upcoming titles, and more. In this edition, you'll find words from Game Informer editors about why now might be a great time to jump back into Marvel Rivals if you haven't in a minute, the strange (and normal) ways we play Hollow Knight: Silksong, what it's like watching someone else play The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and yes, a quick tease about an upcoming first-party PlayStation 5 game we can't talk too much about yet. So without further ado: Hey Listen* *ReadBelow, we'll list the names of Game Informer editors and their thoughts for this week's edition of whatever we end up calling this. Matt Miller Marvel Rivals Season 4 If you've been away for a few months (or you've yet to try out the comic book-inspired title), today's launch of Season 4 is a good reason to hop back in. Alongside a new season pass filled with the expected mix of cool costumes (Dark Phoenix!), the new storyline focuses on a sort of battle between heaven and hell, exemplified through two new heroes entering the roster -- Angela and Daredevil. Angela is already in the mix, and her tank-oriented Vanguard playstyle is different from others we've seen in that role, going back and forth between free flight and on-the-ground axe attacks. We're just getting started learning her moves, but it's always fun to see how new characters shake up the experience. Kyle Hilliard Ghost of Yōtei, Hollow Knight: Silksong I am allowed to say that I am playing Ghost of Yōtei and that our review will post on Thursday, September 25 at 9:00 a.m. ET. But that’s all I can say! Don’t ask me anything else. For my own, non-professional gaming time, it may shock you to learn I am trying to make my way through Silksong, but the going has been slow. I have also been enjoying The Rogue: Prince of Persia quite a bit, so I would like to spend more time with that, as well. I wish I had it on Switch 2, though. Wesley LeBlanc Metal Eden Metal Eden is a game I'm right on the cusp of finishing – I'm on the final level, actually – and I look forward to writing a review for it on Game Informer next week. It's there where I'll talk about why I like this game so much, but it's here I'll discuss why I love covering games like Metal Eden. It is a game I checked out on a random whim during a June Steam Next Fest, and I loved its demo. Fast forward a few months to its launch, and I didn't get around to the full release until weeks later due to life and other work priorities. Man, am I so glad I did. Amidst a backlog and current log of triple-A releases like Death Stranding 2, Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, and more, Metal Eden is a great reminder that there are games worth seeing and playing outside of the typical triple-A circuit of marketing. Sure, Metal Eden didn't appear in a major first-party showcase, but it's still a game worthy of your time if you like shooters, games like Ghostrunner, and the sights and sounds of cyberpunk dystopia. For me, Metal Eden was one part a good time and another part a personal check that it's always good to keep an eye on some of the smaller, less marketed games of the year. Charles Harte The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom While my recent weeks of gaming have been spent chasing the latest trends, my fiancée Alyssa has finally been getting into Tears of the Kingdom, thanks to the Switch 2 upgrade. She recently found the last of the geoglyph memories, which was a reminder for me of just how beautiful and tragic the game's story is. It's also nice to see that, as a contrast to my direct, progression-focused playstyle, Alyssa doesn't need to finish a game by a certain day or rush to avoid spoilers. On one hand, I'm glad she's enjoying the journey. On the other hand, I'm extremely eager for her to get to the ending, because I've been talking up this final boss for like two years now and I want to see if she thinks it lives up to the hype. She'll save Hyrule eventually, but she's probably going to spend a few more hours collecting horses first. Marcus Stewart Donkey Kong Bananza, Hollow Knight: Silksong I'm still punching my way through Donkey Kong Bananza. I'm over halfway through the game with only one Bananza transformation still missing, but I'm still not tired of wrecking everything in sight. It's rather cathartic. I'm not sure if I'll be able to get DK and Pauline to the planet's core this weekend, as I'll be dedicating most of my gaming time to a secret review game. Beyond collecting bananas, I've been chipping away at Hollow Knight: Silksong. Getting it on Switch 2 makes it great for quick sessions before bed, because I apparently enjoy going to bed angry at not beating a difficult boss for the fifth straight attempt. At least Shakra's soothing and catchy hymns calm me down. Alex Van Aken Hollow Knight: Silksong Hollow Knight: Silksong has enchanted me, its gorgeously rendered world calling for me to continue exploring its many areas. I love stumbling across new characters or items that change my character build. I’m spending the weekend closing out Act 1, and I can’t wait to dive in after work! View the full article

Silksong Act 1 Reactions And Borderlands 4 Developer Interview | The Game Informer Show
Hollow Knight: Silksong is finally available, and we've been playing the highly anticipated Metroidvania. In this week's episode of The Game Informer Show, we dive into our impressions of Silksong's first act (roughly the first eight hours, up until the Greymoor area) and boss fights. Beforehand, Marcus interviews Gearbox leads Graeme Timmins and Andrew Reiner (big disclaimer: Reiner was formerly EIC of Game Informer) about Borderlands 4, which was released a few days ago. Finally, we round out the show by breaking down our Hell is Us review, a fascinating investigation puzzle game with action elements. Notably, Hell is Us is not a Soulslike. Every Switch 2 Upgrade From The September 2025 Nintendo Direct, Including A Free Stardew Valley Update And Hades 2 At 120 FPS
The main advantage of Nintendo Switch 2 over its predecessor is its improved hardware, so it's nice that so many developers, Nintendo included, are taking advantage of it to boost Switch 1 titles. Today's Nintendo Direct may have announced huge new games, like Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave and Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, but we also got smaller improvements to some exciting games from the Switch 1's lineup. From Stardew Valley to Hades II, here's every Switch 2 version we learned about today. Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 October 2, 2025 Nintendo is re-releasing Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 on Switch, adding "improved UI" and the ability to alternate between motion and button controls. The Switch 2 versions, however, will include a free update that allows each game to run in 4K resolution. Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park Spring 2026 This upgraded Switch 2 version of one of our favorite games of 2023 adds Bellabel Park, a new area where you can experience a slew of attractions to cooperate or compete with your fellow players. The trailer also teased some other improvements and content, though we'll have to wait a bit longer to learn what those are. Bellabel Park drops next spring. Stardew Valley Fall 2025 One of the biggest indie games of all time is getting an upgrade on Nintendo's newest console. In addition to mouse controls, which will make some tasks like decorating and inventory management slightly more convenient, it's getting support for new multiplayer options. Stardew Valley on Switch 2 will support four-player split screen, eight-player online play, and GameShare, the Switch 2 feature that allows you to play with another console, even if they don't have the game. Best of all, this update is completely free. Overcooked! 2 Holiday 2025 The goofy kitchen sim that will make you question your closest relationships is getting some performance boosts on Switch 2. You'll be able to play in 4K at 60 fps, and it'll also include GameShare as well as Camera Play, meaning you can watch the light drain from your companions' eyes as they realize they burned another pizza and let everyone down. Exciting! The Switch 2 version will also add an exclusive playable chef: Platinum Platypus. One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 Fall 2025 Today's 15-second trailer for One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 only clarified that the Switch 2 version of the game will fit more enemies on the screen at once. It's not super clear what other upgrades are coming to this new version, but a press release has clarified it will be available as a free download for owners of the Switch 1 version this fall. Hades II September 25, 2025 It's not news that this game is getting a Switch 2 edition – we knew that from the console's first reveal – but today we learned the exact improvements. The Switch 2 version of the game will be able to run at 4K resolution with 120 fps while docked and at 1080p resolution with 60 fps in handheld mode. Both the Switch 1 and 2 versions are out digitally in just a few weeks on September 25. Which of these upgrades will you be checking out? Let us know in the comments! View the full article

Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave Comes To Switch 2 In 2026
Fire Emblem is back, and for the first time, it's launching on Switch 2. Fortune's Weave, the latest in the series, centers around a coliseum, which seems to hold the "heroic games," but if we know anything about the series, this seemingly friendly competition will eventually devolve into a massive war between kingdoms. You can check out the reveal trailer below. The trailer focuses on four main characters. Cai (the apparent protagonist based on the fact that we see him freely roaming around the city), says, "I only want to fight so I can save my father's life," making him an unwilling participant in the game. Meanwhile, Theodora boasts about her strength and hopes to be a worthy queen, Deitrich (who looks a lot like Castlevania's Alucard) wants to confront some kind of darkness, and Leda is on a quest for revenge so intense that killing her foe isn't enough. It seems that the winner of the games will get a wish granted by the kingdom's "divine sovereign," which tracks, given that the titular Fire Emblem is typically an artifact that grants one's wishes. The trailer ends with what appears to be Sothis, the magical girl in the player's head in Three Houses, now an adult. She remarks on the years being long, and given that it's been six years since Three Houses hit Switch, I'm inclined to agree. The trailer ends with a release window: 2026. I'm a huge fan of both Three Houses and Engage, so I'm excited to learn more about Fortune's Weave next year. View the full article

Donkey Kong Bananza Is Getting A Roguelike Mode With DK Island & Emerald Rush DLC Today
Announced during today's Nitnendo Direct, Donkey Kong Bananza is getting DLC today with DK Island & Emerald Rush. DK Island is a new level modeled after Donkey Kong's home from Donkey Kong Country, complete with his giant head. Donkey Kong's family will also be hanging out on the island. If you've beaten the game, Void Kong will also offer to hire you, which leads to the Emerald Rush mode. Though not explicitly called a roguelike mode by Nintendo, it allows DK and Pauline to partake in runs where they have to collect emeralds in a certain amount of time. Collecting fossils and Banandium gems let's DK choose upgrades that he can use on that run. Along with being able to play the mode on DK Island, the other levels will also have Emerald Rush runs. Performing well in Emerald Rush awards new fashion options and statues that you can place around DK's home. Along with the DLC being available today, a demo for Donkey Kong Bananza will also be available. You can read Game Informer's Donkey Kong Bananza review by following the link. View the full article

Somehow, Virtual Boy Is Returning And Joining Nintendo Switch Online
Nintendo has a rich history of beloved consoles, from the Super Nintendo to the 3DS, that have filled generations of children with joy. They also released a console called the Virtual Boy. To call this console before its time is an understatement; the Virtual Boy is a retro attempt at virtual reality that left many complaining about strained necks and headaches. Despite that, Nintendo is honoring its legacy and bringing the lineup to the Switch Online Expansion pack for Switch 1 and 2. The new collection comes with a physical Virtual Boy that you slot your Switch 1 or 2 into. after setting it on a table in front of you, you'll press your head against it to see the screen. If you don't want the big plastic Virtual Boy sitting on your table, Nintendo is also releasing a cardboard model, presumably for cheaper than the big one, and in the style of the Labo VR it experimented with a while ago. The collection will eventually have 14 games, but in Nintendo fashion, they'll be drip-fed to us slowly over time. The first batch launches early next year, on February 17. Are you excited for the Virtual Boy to come back? Let us know in the comments! View the full article

Super Mario Galaxy 1 And 2 Are Coming To Switch This October
Hot off the heels of the announcement of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Nintendo announced that both Super Mario Galaxy games are finally coming to Switch this October. 2007’s Super Mario Galaxy and 2010’s Super Mario Galaxy 2 are being bundled together in a physical edition, but each game can also be purchased standalone digitally. Each game is designed for the original Switch, meaning they're also playable on Switch 2. While Super Mario Galaxy was previously available on Switch via the Super Mario 3D All-Stars, that game is no longer available to for purchase. This gives fans who missed that collection another chance to own Galaxy and its equally excellent sequel, which is making its Switch debut after being excluded from 3D All-Stars. Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 will be available on Switch on October 2, 2025 Additionally, Nintendo is releasing new Galaxy-themed amiibo of Mario and Rosalina on April 2, 2026 and physical version of the storybook featured in the first Mario Galaxy. Nintendo Announces Yoshi And The Mysterious Book For Switch 2 Next Spring
Nintendo is kicking off its September direct with a segment devoted to Mario's 40th anniversary, and what would Mario be without his trusty steed, Yoshi? To close out its lineup of games starring the world's most famous plumber, Nintendo closed the opening with the announcement of a new Yoshi game: Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. The first thing that stands out is its art style, which takes a hand-drawn aesthetic and pseudo stop-motion animation style. Other than that, it's a classic-looking 2D Yoshi. When a talking encyclopedia named Mr. E shows up, Yoshi hops inside to learn about its contents. As he explores and inevitably devours its cute and whimsical inhabitants, Yoshi takes notes on their flavor profiles and varying abilities. The trailer goes on to show a variety of different creatures riding Yoshi, Mario-style, which gives him different abilities, like fishing, surfing on waves, and throwing his rider at a wooden bullseye. There's not much else we know, based on the short trailer, but we're excited to learn more about this new chapter of the green gobbler. Yoshi and the Mysterious Book launches Spring 2026. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Hits Theaters In April
Nintendo has announced The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie that hit theaters in 2023, and it's coming to the silver screen in April and will also be made by Illumination. Shigeru Miyamoto opened today's Nintendo Direct with a look at Super Mario Bros. for its 40th anniversary, and he revealed The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be the main attraction of the celebration. Alongside this news, we learned that Brian Taylor will be returning to compose the score, and that various actors, including Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, Charlie Day, Keegan-Michael Key, and Kevin Michael Richardson, are returning to play Mario, Princess Peach, Bowser, Luigi, Toad, and Kamek, respectively. We didn't receive any new casting updates, but considering this movie is taking Mario to space, we'll likely be hear about casting for characters like Rosalina and a Luma, perhaps. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hits theaters in April 2026. Naughty Dog's Debated Going Straight Into The Last Of Us Part III After Part II
Naughty Dog president and The Last of Us director Neil Druckmann has seemingly revealed that The Last of Us Part III is, at the very least, an idea that's been floated at the studio. In a new interview with Variety, Druckmann says Naughty Dog debated going straight into Part III after completing Part II, but that ultimately, the team decided to move forward on what we now know as Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. While a Part III to The Last of Us seems like a no-brainer, considering how well this franchise does for Naughty Dog and PlayStation, Druckmann has given mixed signals over the years. When The Last of Us Part II Remastered dropped last year, it eventually included Grounded II, a documentary about the making of the game. Near the end of it, Druckmann said, "For years now, I haven't been able to find that concept [for Part III], but recently, that's changed, and I don't have a story, but I do have a conept that to me is as exciting as 1, as exciting as 2, is its own thing, and yet has this throughline for all three. So it does feel like there's probably one more chapter to this story." But then, in a March 2025 Variety interview, Druckmann, when asked about a potential Part III, said, "I guess the only thing I would say is don't be on there being more of The Last of Us. This could be it." Now, in a new interview with Variety, Druckmann has seemingly revealed that Naughty Dog, at one point, had plans regarding a Part III game in its Last of Us franchise. When asked about potential Intergalactic sequels, Druckmann said, "We don't tend to plan too much in the future, because we find – and this is something I inherited, it's just the Naughty Dog culture – that we do our best work when it's something we're really excited about, really passionate about. "Just to give you an example, when we finished The Last of Us Part II, and that was highly successful for us, we were debating whether we should just go straight into The Last of Us 3, and we had a really long period where we looked at ideas for maybe what could be in that game." The team looked at Uncharted, Jak and Daxter, and its "sci-fi thing," though, and Druckmann said what is now Intergalactic is where the team's passion led it. So for now, it sounds like a third Last of Us game is on the theoretical or potential table as Naughty Dog continues work on Intergalactic.
